Science

WHAT IS A SCIENTIST???

I think a scientist is a person who studies science. they work in a lab and they studie things about science. they find cures for diseases, they find out about space, they find out about new species and research about dinosaurs.

Google says "a person who is studying or has expert knowledge of one or more of the natural or physical sciences." a scientist is someone who conducts  research to gain knowledge in an area.

Research on Rachel Carson
Rachel Carson, writer, scientist, and ecologist, grew up simply in the rural river town of Springdale, Pennsylvania. Her mother bequeathed to her a life-long love of nature and the living world that Rachel expressed first as a writer and later as a student of marine biology. Carson graduated from Pennsylvania College for Women (now Chatham University) in 1929, studied at the Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory, and received her MA in zoology from Johns Hopkins University in 1932.
She was hired by the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries to write radio scripts during the Depression and supplemented her income writing feature articles on natural history for the Baltimore Sun. She began a fifteen-year career in the federal service as a scientist and editor in 1936 and rose to become Editor-in-Chief of all publications for the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Rachel Carson died in 1964 after a long battle against breast cancer. Her witness for the beauty and integrity of life continues to inspire new generations to protect the living world and all its creatures.

    Butterflies

We listened to a story of a girl who wrote a story at school about butterflies and her teacher's opinion. We then had questions to answer.

What language is used in the text? ie what gramer was used?
the Grandparents had broken English and the girl had good English.

What is this text about, how do you know?
The text is about different opinions on things. Because the girl and her Grandparents have a view that you kill white butterflies while the teacher had a opinion that you don't.

What does the author want you to know?
that everyone has a different opinions and that is OK.

How are characters constructed in this text?
They are constructed as the Grandparents are uneducated. I know this because they have broken english and seem very proud that their granddaughter is going to school. They are hard working but take time to look after their granddaughter. The teacher is a educated snob and thinks butterflies are amazing. I know this because she says that butterflies are good and you don't kill them.

What kinds of social realities does the text portray?
That most people don't think that butterflies are bad, or don't think about the downside of growing your own food.

    the Treaty of Waitangi

In social studies we have been learning about the Treaty of Waitangi. We had to make a small presentation on what we had learnt. Here is mine.

    Critical Literacy

Today in English we started learning about critical literacy. We watched two videos and then decontruced them.

The first one was of a 'brain dead' teen whose parents decided to euthanize her. It was posted by The Onion, who takes a story or a situation and turn it into a news article. Search up the onion brain dead teenager on you tube.
Image result for the onion brain dead teenager
    picture not video

The second one was someone ,Andrea Quijada, talking about decoding media. Her parents taught her from a young age how to decode T.V ads. she goes around schools teaching children how to read between the lines of ads on their media feed.

We were taught about the C.R.A.P test
Current. what is the date of your source? Is it recent or old?
Reliability/Relevance. Is the source fair? Does it give references?
Authority. Is the author informed? where was the piece published? Has the work been peer reviewed?
Purpose/Point of View. Is it Fact or Opinion? Does the author have a agenda?
