colours in Coraline

This is another discussion group. Here is what we are talking about

How is colour used to create the two worlds

first picture
what colours can we see
Gray
Green White
Black
Navy

what do we think about these colours
cool/cold
Threatening
Depressing
dull dark
blue gray palette

what do we know about the picture
the dad is hard at work and is not happy, miserable. Coraline is a interruption

what dose the palette do
blue gray
-Creates a mood of sadness
-not exciting colours
-combined with a dull cool light, it makes the scene sad and depressing

second picture
what colours can we see
Reds/Orange

what do we think about these colours
Warm
Bright
red orange palette

what do we know about the picture
Dad is happily practicing piano waiting for coraline

If the colour palette was reversed then the real world would be warm and happy and the other world would feel cold

The director uses this colour palette to reflect Coraline's feeling towards a place. When the blue gray palette is used she feels lonely and unhappy in this place. If there is an orange and red palette, she is happier

The colours are gloomy, dark and washed out. The predominant colour used in this palette is gray because it creates an atmosphere of sadness and boredom. The director has done this to help the viewer empathise with coraline in her real world were she feels ignored

The Colours in the other world Palette are bright, Radiant and vivid. The Predominant Colours used are shads of Orange and Red which gives it a mood of excitement. This is done to re-enforce the idea that coraline is wanted in the other world. It is a wondrous place for her to be. However we know that this is all part of the other mothers plan to lull her in.

The colours in the scenes with the evil other mother are bright, creepy and vivid. The predominant colours used is green and purple, because this has a creepy feel along with the lighting. The director has used these colours to make the room have a contrast to the rest of the house by the end of the film.
