MATHS-coutulating the squares on the edge of an even grid

Hello. In math today Mr Ress got us to work out how many squares are in the outside of a 10 x 10 square. We have found 6 ways of doing said ecation. two of the ways is on that I found which is  (n-1)+(n-1)+(n-1)+(n-1)= a
A= the answer and N= the number so this turns into... (10-1)+(10-1)+(10-1)+(10-1)=36 or it could be 9+9+9+9=36. Are you confused yet? Because I am. If we were to simplify this then it would be 4(n-1)=a or 4 x 9 = 36. Now if you are wondering how I got n-1,  it is because when you count the sides you end up counting the corners twice and so you just take one  AGGG!  well I can't explain. Um here is a picture that explains it a bit better than I can

Another way, is 4n -4. Or 4 x 10 - 4 because you have your 10x4=40 but you have counted your corners twice so you just get rid of one of the times by taking away 4 so you have your anwer, 36.

here are all the ways to do it

I know this was hard to understand, I can't seem to find a way to explain this easily. Sorry for making it so hard to understand. I wouldn't of posted this but I had to. Sorry. Can you think of any other ways of doing this?

Charters Challenges-Coraline

As one of my tasks for Coraline I had to Select 4 lead characters and create a Challenges Chart. here it is

Characters Name
Coraline
A Challenge faced by the character
Saving herself and everyone else
How the character reacted
She kept trying and was sly and slick.
What that shows us about the character
She wound give up on the ones she loves

Characters Name

W.B
A Challenge faced by the character
Coraline was constantly mean to him
How the character reacted
He still tried to be friendly and he tried to help
What that shows us about the character
He does what he thinks is right, and doesn’t give up on it

Characters Name

Other Mother
A Challenge faced by the character
Convincing coraline to stay in the other world
How the character reacted
She got more and more impatient and make rushed moves What that shows us about the character
She has a short temper and wants things to be done as quickly as possible

Characters Name
Other Father A Challenge faced by the character
Trying to worn Coraline without the Other mother finding out How the character reacted
He came up with clever ways to try and get the message across What that shows us about the character

Coraline

this is some work for a workshop with Mrs Handly

night
other world
wybie 'other'
cant talk
mother and coraline going into the house after seeing the show
POV other mother wants wybie to smile
wybie is unhappy

warm light
high angle, makes the subject vulnerable wybie and the pov is of the other mother
dark colours but bright because coraline does not know this yet
facial expression-sad because his mouth has gone down and is eyebrows are arched in fear.

S.E.X.X.X.Y ------> The lawyer
In the film Coraline, high angle shots are used effectively to establish a characters position of power. This is demonstrated in the scene where Coraline and Wybie return from visiting their neighbours. A high angle shot from the POV of the other mother looking down the stairs towards wybie makes him look vulnerable this makes us understand that the other mother has all the power and might not be as kind as coraline thinks at this point. The purpose of this is to show a character that is unhappy in the 'other' world and foreshadow the horrific turn of events later in the story. Combined with the use of facial expression,Wybie's mouth is frowning and his eyebrows are arched in fear, the idea of being vulnerable is enhanced. this aspect asn be compared to coralines battle with the other mother at the end of the film, where we get to see the true evtl nature of the beldam

Symbols Scavenger Hunt

I had to make a Symbols Scavenger Hunt for the button eyes, the coraline doll and the button key. I'm not sure this is what they wanted but this is all I could come up with. Here it is

Create a Symbols Scavenger Hunt for the viewer. Give them an explanation

of 3 Symbols to look for and a list of key moments in the film they could look

for them. Remember to include an answer sheet!

  • Button Eyes- Ref 1, Ref 2
  • Buttons in the novel act much like masks in that they conceal. Buttons though
conceal a being’s intentions rather than identity. Coraline cannot read the Other
Parent’s intentions, as they reveal no perceptible emotion through their dead, plastic
button eyes. She can’t even discern if they’re watching her, as the buttons don’t rotate
the way normal human eyes do. The buttons therefore become a symbol of the
inscrutability and inhumanity of the Other Parents.
  • The black button eyes of the other mother are probably the most iconic or
well-known image to come out of Coraline.
  • They were looking at her with their black button eyes. Or at least she thought they
were looking at her. She couldn't be sure. (4.128)
  • These eyes are definitely creepy. The black button eyes let us know that we're in
the other world and highlight how disturbing it is. Buttons are a seemingly harmless object,
but in the other world, they become sinister and threatening. In fact, turning nice things
into threatening things seems to be one of the main functions of the other world and the
beldam herself.
  • These buttons essentially act like masks. Coraline can't tell if her other parents
are watching her and she can't get any clues through their eyes as to what they're thinking.
Because we see so much through people's eyes, these buttons hide the humanness of the
people wearing them (if they're even human at all), preventing us from really knowing a
person. For this reason, Coraline's other mother could never really be known, or loved, by
the children she kidnaps.
  • Coraline Doll
  • ?
  • The Key - Ref 1, Ref 2
  • The key serves as a plot device and is central to the novel as such. The key allows the
bearer access to the human world and the dimension where the Other Mother/The Beldam lives.
Both Coraline and the Other Mother/The Beldam want possession of the key as it represents
freedom and power for them both. The Other Mother/The Beldam desires the key as it affords her
freedom to move back and forth with impunity between dimensions, allowing her both to hunt
and escape reprisal as she pleases, which in turn gives her immense power over her victims.
Coraline wants the key because to her it is both her means of escape, and as with any key, it can
also lock doors barring entry giving her power over The Beldam, who can only find prey in the
human world.
  • The key into the other world becomes a hot commodity, or item, in the story. There's only
one key to the door between the other world and our world. And the other mother and Coraline
both want to control that key.
  • The appearance of the key can help us understand what it represents. Compared to the
other keys, it's "the oldest, biggest, blackest, rustiest key" (1.51). It's different from all the other
keys, just like the other world is different from the real world. In this way, the key seems to
represent the other world: old and ugly.
  • Usually when we think of keys, we think of unlocking something or opening something up.
Coraline certainly does this when she finds the other world. But if keys can unlock, they can also
lock you in. Eek! That's more what Coraline is about – the fear of being trapped somewhere you
don't want to be. So how do we eliminate the fear of being trapped? Well, trap the key itself! And
that's exactly what Coraline does.

Clues

1 unusual at first  but gets more and more common as the film roles on. Find it in the other world
as coraline find out about the Other Mother.

2 given as a gift it disguised itself as being harmless, but it did more harm than good.
Find it in the second day of being at the house.

3 used to stop a child from pestering but still made trouble. Gets hidden to keep something
locked, should never have been found. Find it in the second day at the house. Belldam also
eats it.

Charters-Coraline-Other mother

we are talking about character design here is some words about the other mother character costume

                1                              2                              3                            4                                  5

hand Change
edged sharpen
gets taller
changes every time we see her
clothes change

Other mother 1
wears comfortable 'mum' cloths.
gray/black-hints of red.
rounder curves warm

Other mother 2
darker clothes-red purple,black
bit taller
head less round
subtle change
lose shirt like a dress
sharp-head and apron

Other mother 3
proportions are changing
more skin-short sleeves and dress
red/black
dress is sharp and stiff, it fits her better and shows her shape
layers of dress like a beetle

Other mother 4
hair pointy
all black except the red shoes
skinny and taller
angular limbs
long neck
dose not look like a real mother

Other mother 5
no nose, no skin-skeletal
meny legs. like a spider
cloths are barely there and are all ripped
very sharp-though how thin she is, how pointed her joints are, use of metal/needle finger

The Director effectively use costume to create the other mother. At the start she is dressed like a normale mother. She is wearing a white long sleeve turtleneck, black leggings and red shoes. this gradually changes over the course of the film. her head becomes darker and she exposes moreskin. by the end of the film her costume is more spider like. her body id a metal skeleton with lots of sharp angles and her clothes are black rags. the director has done this to show us that the other mother is evil and that her looks were deceiving

colour and lighting are important in creating the other mother when we first see her it is a warm lighting with shades of yellow and orange. this makes the viewer feel happy and safe. by the end of the film scenes with the other mother are dimly lit with a cold light and green and black colour palette. this is because she has turned into her real self, a demon-like spiders who is evil and tries to steal children's souls though their eyes.

coraline time line

this is a timeline of the settings in the first little bit of the film. here is my time line

colours in Coraline

This is another discussion group. Here is what we are talking about

How is colour used to create the two worlds

first picture
what colours can we see
Gray
Green White
Black
Navy

what do we think about these colours
cool/cold
Threatening
Depressing
dull dark
blue gray palette

what do we know about the picture
the dad is hard at work and is not happy, miserable. Coraline is a interruption

what dose the palette do
blue gray
-Creates a mood of sadness
-not exciting colours
-combined with a dull cool light, it makes the scene sad and depressing

second picture
what colours can we see
Reds/Orange

what do we think about these colours
Warm
Bright
red orange palette

what do we know about the picture
Dad is happily practicing piano waiting for coraline

If the colour palette was reversed then the real world would be warm and happy and the other world would feel cold

The director uses this colour palette to reflect Coraline's feeling towards a place. When the blue gray palette is used she feels lonely and unhappy in this place. If there is an orange and red palette, she is happier

top picture is picture one
bottom picture is picture two

colour palette 1
Gray/yellow
pictures for it

The colours are gloomy, dark and washed out. The predominant colour used in this palette is gray because it creates an atmosphere of sadness and boredom. The director has done this to help the viewer empathise with coraline in her real world were she feels ignored

colour palette two
blue/red
pictures for palette

The Colours in the other world Palette are bright, Radiant and vivid. The Predominant Colours used are shads of Orange and Red which gives it a mood of excitement. This is done to re-enforce the idea that coraline is wanted in the other world. It is a wondrous place for her to be. However we know that this is all part of the other mothers plan to lull her in.

colour palette three
Green/Purple
pictures for palette

The colours in the scenes with the evil other mother are bright, creepy and vivid. The predominant colours used is green and purple, because this has a creepy feel along with the lighting. The director has used these colours to make the room have a contrast to the rest of the house by the end of the film.

Lighting in coraline

this is the work I have done in discussion group. Here is the work.

The lighting in this shot makes the house feel cold, old and run down. This is done by using a ‘cool white’
light coming into the room from a cloudy window. The director has used this lighting to enhance the idea
that coraline's life at home is dull and boring and that she is unhappy there,. It alsos contracts the other
world witch is bright and warmly lit

The lighting used in this shot to make the secan seem warm, exciting and welcoming.
This is done by using a warm light that is coming from the warm, yellow tinted, light bulb from the top of
the shot. The director has used this lighting to make it seem a happy place and it is a place she can feel
safe and have what she wants.

4

The lighting used in the shot is dark, cold and scary. There is a spot of light where coraline and the door
is. This is done by having a window out of shot to outline the area. The director has used this lighting to
direct the viewer's attention to what is going on. This makes you feel nervous as it is a dark room with
very little light

Government

In social studies we have been learning about Government. This is about the basic structure of the New Zealand.

We have a democratic government meaning that we vote for a certain party, grope of people, to be in charge. We do this every 3 or so years. The current head of state is Queen Elizabeth ll who is represented by Dame Patsy Reddy here in new zealand.

Me, Paige and Ruby worked on this.

What am I learning?
I am learning about the different types of camera shots in film

How does this show my learning?
This shows my learning because I have taken the pictures that correlate to the term

What am I wondering?
I am wondering how the people came up with the names for the shots

Kahoot Film study

For a introduction to film study we had to do 2 activities and this is one of them

I had to make a kahoot quiz on the film language. I Don't know how to link this to my blog though. here is the list of words

Body Language, Costumes, Hairstyles, Make-Up, Colour, Lighting, Props, Settings, Dialogue, Sound Effects, Music, Silence, Symbols, Special FX.
